I’ll talk to anybody. I’m what you might call a jabberjockey.
Of course, that’s my job as a folk journalist. Talk to folks.
And you can talk to anyone too. Starting a conversation can be fun.
Really!
See that woman carrying one of those huge Starbucks ice coffees across the parking lot?
“That coffee’s bigger than you are!” I venture.
She laughs and agrees with me.
See that father with baby on his shoulder and a few groceries on the stroller seat?
“‘What a lovely baby!” I say directly to the stroller.
Big daddy laughs, hoisting little baby another notch up on the shoulder.
Yesterday I passed a woman standing in front of a restaurant on Melrose Avenue.
It was early evening, the seven o’clock sun just catching her face in a way that made it very bright.
“You should have all your pictures taken just like this,” I said. “That sun. Your face. Wow.”
She laughed and said: “You made my day.”
Wanna make someone’s day?
Throw something out there. Jabberjock your way to connection.
Because after all, when you make their day, they’ve made yours.
So until next time, when I’ll present a short film of a sweet teenager trying to connect with conversation, this is your local folk journalist saying: “See ya!”
